Be sure to understand the difference between your HMRC reference number and your charity reference number. They are different! Confusing them can result in a failed claim.

The HMRC number will have been issued to you by HMRC and is used to identify your charity in all aspects of its relationship with HMRC. It is usually about five digits long and starts with an X for English and Welsh charities, CR for Scottish charities and CH for charities in Northern Ireland.

For further information on HMRC registration, see: ‘Before you Start’ and https://www.gov.uk/charity-recognition-hmrc

The Charity Registration Number is issued to charities registered with the Charities Commission for England and Wales, the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator or the Charities Commission for Northern Ireland.

If your charity is registered, the regulator should also be shown.

Note that many charities, particularly schools, very small charities and many churches, are not registered. In these circumstances, show the regulator as ‘None (excepted or exempt)’.

For further information on charities registration, see ‘Before you Start’, https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/charity-commission

The ‘Organisation Details’ page automatically displays the Fund Filer account number.
